Vinyl releases

Nuclear Blast, NB 1291-1 / 27361 12911, one heavyweight picture disc and one heavyweight black vinyl, side D plays at 45RPM

    - BARCODE, as printed on the back cover: 7 27361 12911 8

    - RUNOUTS: side A, full runouts, stamped: B402769-01 A1 MK

side B, full runouts, stamped: B402769-01 B1 MK

side C, full runouts, stamped: B402769-02 C2 MK

                          side D, full runouts, stamped: B402769-02 D2

    - NUMBER OF SONGS: 12 (4/4+3/1)

    - VINYL: sides A, B and C cut by MK and pressed by OM in 2004 on heavy weight vinyl (PD 224g and black vinyl 182g in my copy),

picture disc: NB 1291-1 ℗+© 2004 LC 07027 MANUFACTURED IN GERMANY

    - CENTER LABELS: picture labels with black text on sides C and D

    - COVER: die-cut cardboard sleeve,

                    ℗ + © 2004 Nuclear Blast GmbH · Manufactured in Germany · NB 1291-1 · LC 07027,

spine: Nightwish   -   ONCE     NUCLEAR BLAST 27361 12911

    - INNERSLEEVES: The picture disc comes in thick clear plastic sleeve and the black vinyl in thin white paper sleeve, die-cut from both sides to show the center labels and

all corners clipped (these are the original innersleeves)

    - RELEASED: Made in 2004 based on the runouts, most likely also released in 2004.

    - OTHER: Includes misprinted insert with only lyrics and images of the band members with their names, no credits given anywhere on this release.

Misprint: the insert contains lyrics of White Night Fantasy, which does not appear on this release and only partial lyrics of The Siren and Creek Mary's Blood.

    - NOTE 1: This is one of the releases where you can clearly hear the difference in black vinyl and picture disc, the black vinyl sounds a lot more precise and simply has

a lot better sound quality than the picture disc.

In addition the pressing quality might be a lot better as all the sides are pressed off-center but the A side is pressed so heavily off-center it's practically

                     unplayable.

The cutting quality is pretty good though.

    - NOTE 2: The black vinyl is one of the best vinyl editions yet made of this album but the picture disc makes this release a turnoff for me if I want to enjoy good music.

The 2013 black vinyl is a really good alternative if you want a fully black vinyl but knowing some other KR cuts the D side worries me.

    - VINYL: pressed by Orlake in the UK,

Under license from Nuclear Blast records. Manufactured & Distributed by PHD. Made In The UK. ℗ Nuclear Blast records 2004 © Back On Black 2005 ...

    - COVER: clear gatefold-styled plastic sleeve with sticker

    - RELEASED: Reissue released in 2005.

    - OTHER: Supposedly originally not released sealed.

    - NOTE 1: These are poor quality records even for picture discs and are meant only for decoration.

My copy was already badly warped and pressed badly off-center when I got it new.

    - NOTE 2: These records are cut at higher volume than the release right above though I won't be playing any of these three picture discs whenever I want to enjoy music.

    - NUMBER OF SONGS: 13 (4/4+3/2, the two songs on side D are bonus tracks)

    - VINYL: pressed by and most likely also cut at RI in the Netherlands

    - CENTER LABELS: picture labels with tracklist,

                                    NB 2819-1-1 (sides A and B) / NB 2819-1-2 (sides C and D)

    - COVER: gatefold cover,

spine: Nightwish   -   ONCE     NUCLEAR BLAST 27361 28191

    - INNERSLEEVES: white polylined paper innersleeves, die-cut to show the center labels and all corners clipped (the original innersleeves)

    - RELEASED: Should have been released in 2011 but the release date was postponed to 2012 supposedly due to manufacturing delays.

    - OTHER: Includes poster, originally released sealed with only a barcode sticker on the back on shrinkwrap ie there is no infosticker on the front on shrinkwrap which

makes this look like a standard version (for a while NB had a habit of NOT marking the standard, usually black, vinyl with an infosticker).

    - NOTE 1: Released simultaneously on

                          * blue/white/black vinyl

                          * white vinyl

                          * blue vinyl (limited to 150 hand-numbered copies)

                          * white/blue/clear mixed vinyl a.k.a. multi-coloured vinyl (limited to 150 hand-numbered copies).

    - NOTE 2: This release does not contain any credits, the inner gatefold prints are just direct copies of the insert that came with the first vinyl release (PD + black vinyl)

and because of that the same errors are still present.

    - NOTE 3: The barcode sticker on shrinkwrap was used to ID this from the white, blue and white/blue/clear vinyl editions, the gatefold cover is identical to all four releases.

    - NOTE 4: Limited edition with 180g vinyl according to Nuclear Blast webshop, neither one is actually printed or mentioned anywhere on this release.

    - NOTE 5: AFAIK the limitation amount of this blue/white/black vinyl pressing and the white vinyl pressing right below have not been released publicly but based on

the number of people who claim to have this and the other three 2011/2012 RI pressings in their collection on Discogs I believe 400 copies were pressed on

white vinyl and 300 on blue/white/black vinyl which would make the total pressing a very sensible amount of 1000 copies.

    - NOTE 6: This is cut at lower volume than the MK cut of the original 2004 vinyl edition and the 2013 reissues.

The 2013 black vinyl definitely sounds more accurate and rougher than this one and has more air between instruments most likely because of the cut

and the fact this is pressed on coloured vinyl.

Of these 2011/2012 RI pressings this blue/white/black and white/blue/clear vinyl sound significantly softer and less accurate than the blue and white

vinyl pressings. The blue and white vinyl are the better ones to play though I still prefer the air and accuracy of the 2013 black vinyl.

The gatefold cover is identical to all four releases.

    - NOTE 4: The vinyl are not truly white, IMO they are cream coloured like the white vinyl of Record Industry usually is.

    - NOTE 5: AFAIK the limitation amount of this white vinyl pressing and the blue/white/black vinyl pressing right above have not been released publicly but based on

    - INNERSLEEVES: white polylined paper innersleeves, die-cut to show the center labels and all corners clipped (the original innersleeves)

    - RELEASED: Released in early July 2013 about a week before the three DPP reissues.

    - OTHER: Includes poster and 12" ad, originally released sealed with infosticker on the front.

    - NOTE 1: This release does not contain any credits, the inner gatefold prints are just direct copies of the insert that came with the first vinyl release (PD + black vinyl)

and because of that the same errors are still present.

    - NOTE 2: Sides A, B and C are represses of the original 2004 vinyl release (PD + black vinyl).

    - NOTE 3: The poster has different image than the poster of the previous four RI made reissues right above.

    - NOTE 4: The pressing quality is VERY good with nearly perfectly flat and nearly perfectly centered records.

This one sounds somewhat dull and smoother compared to the black vinyl of the 2004 vinyl release (PD + black vinyl) but the difference is small.

The original black vinyl definitely has better edge and dynamics over this one.

Unfortunately side D has that high frequency KR cut sound making it unplayable with my equipment.

All the 2011/2012 RI pressings above have softer and less accurate sound quality and they have worse quality cut though I might prefer it if a black vinyl

                     pressing existed.

    - OTHER: Includes poster and 12" ad, originally released sealed with two stickers on shrinkwrap (numbered infosticker on the front and barcode sticker on the back).

    - NOTE 3: The poster has different image than the poster of the previous four RI made reissues above.

    - NOTE 4: Originally announced to be Nuclear Blast mailorder exclusive but months later in 2014 EMP or Mad Supply were also selling copies on grey vinyl.

    - NOTE 5: This grey vinyl edition is not as well pressed as the black vinyl edition right above, bigger warps on the edges and more off-centered records.

The corresponding black vinyl edition right above sounds a lot more precise and therefore also has better sound quality than this grey vinyl edition.

However, this does sounds better than the picture discs.

Nuclear Blast, NB4879-1 / 27361 48791, two normal weight black vinyl, reissue, limited edition

    - BARCODE, as printed on the back cover: 7 27361 48791 1

    - RUNOUTS: side A, full runouts, etched: NB 4879-1 · A²

side B, full runouts, etched: NB 4879-1 · B²

side C, full runouts, etched: NB 4879-1. C²

side D, full runouts, etched: NB 4879-1. D²

    - NUMBER OF SONGS: 14 (4/3+3/4, including Live to Tell the Tale, White Night Fantasy and Where Were You Last Night)

    - VINYL: most likely pressed by Optimal Media

    - CENTER LABELS: picture labels without tracklist,

                                    LC 07027, GEMA, NB 4879-1-1 (sides A and B) / NB 4879-1-2 (sides C and D)

    - COVER: gatefold cover,

                    ℗ + © 2021 • Nuclear Blast GmbH • LC 07027 • 33 RPM,

                    spine: Nightwish   Once     27361 48791

    - INNERSLEEVES: black polylined paper innersleeves, die-cut to show the center labels and all corners clipped (the original innersleeves)

    - RELEASED: Released on 6th of August 2021 (source: BRS webshop and Nuclear Blast webshop when this was on preorder stage).

    - OTHER: Includes roughly around 12" x 24" folded insert. Originally released sealed with one infosticker on the front on shrinkwrap.

Cat# NB4879-1 appears only on the infosticker on the front.

    - NOTE 1: Finally the insert contains full credits and correct lyrics for the standard 11 tracks found on pretty much every edition of this album!

Unfortunately now the lyrics of Live to Tell the Tale, White Night Fantasy and Where Were You Last Night are completely missing.

Strangely the two usual bonus tracks and Where Were You Last Night are not marked bonus tracks anywhere on this release.

    - NOTE 2: It has been frequently noted by shops that due to COVID-19 the vinyl pressing plants are crowded and pressings are frequently late.

I preordered this along with the clear vinyl, lilac/grey splatter vinyl and mailorder edition from NB and they all were sent together 12 days later than the

                     announced release date was.

NB did send an email about the delayed release of the lilac/grey splatter vinyl edition "due to production reasons on the part of the press plant".

    - NOTE 3: This is clearly a higher volume cut than the original 2004 MK cut. Both are VERY good quality cuts but I prefer more of the 2004 MK cut since it's more

smoother to my ears, you can clearly hear it from the guitars. The difference is most likely mostly due to remastering as it has been announced all these 2021

versions of this release are remastered.

Cat# NB4879-3 appears only on the infosticker on the front.

    - NOTE 1: Finally the insert contains full credits and correct lyrics for the standard 11 tracks found on pretty much every edition of this album!

    - NOTE 2: It has been frequently noted by shops that due to COVID-19 the vinyl pressing plants are crowded and pressings are frequently late.

This was the first pressing sent to me by BRS for the release date (two days before the official release to be exact but I picked it up on the release date), all

or at least one of the other pressings I ordered from NB were more or less late and because of that the true release date of some pressing(s) was postponed.

    - CENTER LABELS: picture labels without tracklist,

Cat# NB4879-7 appears only on the infosticker on the front.

    - NOTE 1: The vinyl are not truly clear but more like milky clear like the clear vinyl of Optimal Media usually is. However, there is a clearly yellowish tint to the clear vinyl

material not usually seen in Optimal Media pressed clear vinyl and the pressing ring is wider than normally for Optimal Media pressings.

    - NOTE 2: Finally the insert contains full credits and correct lyrics for the standard 11 tracks found on pretty much every edition of this album!

    - NOTE 1: Despite the vinyl colour should be lilac/grey splatter according to NB webshop and the sticker the lilac colour is barely visible and because of that some people

might mix this release with the grey splatter vinyl edition especially if the infosticker is missing.

    - NOTE 2: Finally the insert contains full credits and correct lyrics for the standard 11 tracks found on pretty much every edition of this album!

    - RELEASED: Released on 27th of January 2023 (source: BRS webshop).

    - OTHER: Originally released sealed with one infosticker on the front on shrinkwrap.

    - NOTE 1: The pressing quality might be slightly better as the records are pressed slightly off-center and are warped though nothing that affects the listening experience.

This one sounds a lot smoother to my ears than the previous reissues, even muffled and distant.

In addition this is a low volume cut compared to the previous editions.

    - NOTE 2: The manufacturing of this record has something to do with TAKT but the exact role is uncertain because TAKT, Packaged Sounds and Takt Direct all use

the same matrix scheme. At least this was plated at TAKT.
