    - RELEASED: Most likely a repress of the first US edition made around 1983.

                          Originally released in 1983.

    - NOTE 1: This edition was supposedly originally released only with white polylined innersleeve and therefore without printed innersleeve.

    - NOTE 2: This is the best sounding edition of this album I've yet played, great bass and very good midrange.

The US edition right below sounds somewhat soft and muffled while this one sounds more open and natural and has better midrange.

    - RELEASED: Probably a reissue from the Ride The Lightning era ie around summer 1984 as the Megaforce edition of RTL was also cut by Tom Coyne at Frankford/Wayne

and came with rough-surfaced grey Megaforce labels, I once had a copy of it.

                          Originally released in 1983.

    - NOTE 1: The sound quality is very good especially compared to the US DMM cut reissues below but somewhat soft and muffled. It indeed sounds like something

is missing or badly wrong here. The Sterling cut edition right above sounds more open and natural and has better midrange.

Also, this is a low volume cut but luckily the vinyl is dead quiet.

    - NOTE 2: I've been told this was also pressed on black non-transparent vinyl by emv though I haven't yet seen one myself.

    - RELEASED: Reissue supposedly released in early 1988.

    - NOTE 1: Very similar Canadian pressing with text on the upper half of the center labels exists. Also, some copies seem to have been pressed on dark brown vinyl.

    - NOTE 2: This sounds less harsh than the two US counterparts pressed from the same Masterdisk cut, I definitely prefer this one over the two US releases right above.

However, I like even more of the bassy sound of the '89 reissue below so the only reason to get this would be to have the two extra songs on the same disk.

Blitzkrieg and Am I Evil can be found from the B-side of Creeping Death single.

    - INNERSLEEVE: printed black and white paper innersleeve,

                                ℗ 1983 METALLICA. © 1989 METALLICA.

    - RELEASED: Reissue most likely made and released in 1989 in the Justice era.

    - NOTE 1: The origin of this record, especially the pressing plant, is a real puzzle since the runouts contain characteristic markings of three vinyl manufacturers:

                          * "MASTERDISK" etching of Masterdisk, a well known mastering house

                          * stamped "D  8381421 A-1U-[X'd over 4]1-" of EMI, a well known full service media manufacturer

                          * stamped "1 2" (not so well organized) of Philips, either PRS Ltd. or PRS Baarn, both well known full service media manufacturers.

This was definitely cut at Masterdisk but EMI and Philips both pressed records in the UK or elsewhere and the runouts contain specific stamper numbers

for both companies. It must be noted though that both EMI or Philips stamper numbers or father/mother/pressing plate numbers are only partial: there are

only the cut and the father number for EMI and two numbers of unknown meaning for Philips (mother and pressing plate numbers most likely) suggesting that

EMI processed the cut into father plate and Philips pressed the records. Due to the center label area, the vinyl edge and the characteristic sound quality I

would say this was pressed at the PRS Ltd. plant in the UK but that plant was closed in mid 1988. Next guess? I believe this may have been pressed by Philips in

Holland in the Baarn plant. This would certainly explain all the runout markings and sound quality as UK and Holland Philips pressed records have that bassy

                     sound in them.

    - NOTE 2: The sound quality is VERY good and exceptionally soft and bassy for a DMM record (most likely a result of the vinyl material used by the Baarn plant).

This one sounds a lot more pleasing to my ears than the two DMM cut US editions with bonus tracks above or the DMM cut 45RPM edition from the 80s above

due to the unusual combination of the characteristic bassy sound of the vinyl pressed by the Baarn plant and the harsh sound of DMM cut.

Since I hate the thin and harsh sound of DMM records it's really a coinflip for me between this and the above Megaforce editions with grey center labels.

    - RELEASED: Reissue released on 24th of July 2015 (source: Finnish EMP webshop).

                          Originally released in 1983.

    - OTHER: Originally released sealed without any stickers on shrinkwrap.

This is not mentioned to be 180g pressing anywhere on this release, but this was claimed to be 180g pressing at the Finnish EMP website.

Unlike the next reissue, this one does not contain a sticker on shrinkwrap or come with a digital download code card.

    - NOTE 1: This is the first Pallas pressed LP I find without the standard stamped Pallas ID number on both sides of the runouts.

If you look carefully you'll see the Pallas number is etched on one side only.

    - NOTE 2: This one sounds a lot like the Tom Coyne cut Megaforce edition with grey labels above but with thinner and brighter sound and with much higher emphasis

on the cymbals. IMO this is not even nearly as bad as many people say though this isn't the best possible either due to thin and bright sound in addition to extra

                     compression and over-emphasis of cymbals.

    - RELEASED: Reissue released on 27th of May 2016 (source: Finnish EMP webshop).

    - OTHER: Originally released sealed with infosticker on the front on shrinkwrap. Includes lyrics insert and a digital download code card.

This is not mentioned to be 180g pressing anywhere on this release, but this is claimed to be 180g pressing at the Finnish EMP webshop.

    - NOTE 1: The front cover of this edition was misprinted and withdrawn due to the band logo being printed too big to fully fit on the front cover.

The band logo was corrected and a new corrected reissue was released quickly.

    - NOTE 2: This one sounds a lot more full bodied than all the other vinyl editions of this album I've played so far and especially A LOT more full bodied the previous 2015

                     reissue on Blackened Recordings above.

This is one of the best editions of this album I've played so far along with the MPO pressed 45RPM edition from the 80s and the European '89 reissue with

                     space labels.

    - NOTE 3: The shrinkwrap on this record seems to be VERY tightly wrapped.

    - RELEASED: This is a reissue released after the band was signed to Elektra.

Originally released in 1984 by Megaforce Records in the US some months before Elektra.

    - NOTE: The sound quality is quite good actually though somewhat bright. Based on the releases I have Howie Weinberg has a habit of cutting somewhat bright sounding

records that sound much like DMM records, like this one for instance. This is not mentioned to be DMM record though and the broadly etched runouts also

speak for a lacquer cut record (DMM records usually have very lightly etched runouts). The bright sound may also be due to Specialty vinyl and pressing quality

                   or wear.

    - NOTE: There is VERY little difference to the release right above and should not be much of a difference since both were pressed from the same cut in two different

plants of the same company. However, the Specialty pressing has better pressing quality as my copy of this Allied pressing is warped.

Music For Nations, MFN 27 P, picture disc, reissue

    - BARCODE, as printed on the B-side: 5 016583 102708

    - RUNOUTS, side A, full runouts, etched: MFN-27P [crossed over B]A1 ·ORLAKE·

                          side B, full runouts, etched: MFN-27P B1 ·ORLAKE·

    - NUMBER OF SONGS: 8 (4/4)

    - VINYL: pressed by Orlake in the UK

    - COVER: comes in a custom made clear plastic sleeve

    - RELEASED: This is a reissue released after barcodes became a standard in th e UK, the first edition(s) do not have barcode on the B-side.

At least two cuts are known to exist for these UK picture discs, the other one has small +-marks on the runouts.

    - NOTE: This is quite good quality record especially for a picture disc and not brickwalled but I'll rather play the US Edition above due to more detailed sound quality.

issued under licence from Megaforce Reccords Inc

    - INNERSLEEVES: plain white paper innersleeves, die-cut to show the center labels, all corners clipped (probably not be the original innersleeves)

    - RELEASED: Supposedly released in 1987 (DMM pressings were most common in the late 80s).

                          Originally released in 1984.

    - OTHER: Includes merchant order form, infosticker on the front cover.

    - NOTE 1: These are excellent quality records though very crispy like DMM records usually are.

    - NOTE 2: There exists another 2LP 45RPM reisue of this album as well, the one made in 2008.

The guys who have heard both editions (this and the 2008 45RPM edition) say this one sounds phenomenally better.

                                838 140-1

    - RELEASED: Reissue most likely released in 1989.

    - NOTE: The sound quality is VERY good and exceptionally soft for a DMM record (most likely a result of the vinyl material used by the Baarn plant).

This sounds a lot more pleasing to my ears than the Howie Weinberg cut US edition above or the DMM cut 45RPM edition from the 80s above.

    - INNERSLEEVE: plain white polylined paper innersleeve, upper corners clipped (probably not the original innersleeve)

    - RELEASED: Probably one of the first Music for Nations UK editions released in late 1984 or early 1985.

    - NOTE 1: Due to the French manufacturer this is VERY often said to be French edition but French editions of Metallica releases were released by different labels.

This is actually a UK edition made in France by a UK label for the UK market.

    - NOTE 2: This one sounds much softer and even somewhat muffled compared to the release right below though I prefer the balance/mix more on this record.

    - INNERSLEEVE: plain white paper innersleeve, die-cut only from the other side only to show the center label and no corners clipped (may be the original innersleeve)

    - RELEASED: Probably the first Roadrunner edition released in late 1984 or early 1985.

    - NOTE: This one sounds a lot more open and higher frequency oriented than the MPO pressed edition right above, especially the guitars are very clearly heard.

    - COVER: transparent plastic sleeve

    - RELEASED: Reissue probably released in the late 80s

    - NOTE 1: This is a very funny picture disc with standard center labels and a gold-coloured cardboard pressed in the place of the usual pictures.

    - NOTE 2; The runouts are VERY shallow and impossible to read with the exception of faint STERLING stamp.

    - NOTE 3: This is commonly being sold as unofficial release due to "completely missing runouts" but this is an official release judging from the STERLING stamp.

    - RELEASED: Reissue most likely released in 1989 in the Justice era.

                          Originally released in 1986.

    - NOTE: The sound quality is VERY good and exceptionally soft for a DMM record (most likely a result of the vinyl material used by the Baarn plant).

This one sounds a lot more pleasing to my ears than the original DMM cut US edition pressed by Specialty Records I once had, it was WAY too harsh for my taste.

    - RELEASED: Probably the first US edition made and released in 1988 though sides B, C and D indicate they are of the second cut.

                          Originally released in 1988.

    - OTHER: Comes with sticker on the shrinkwrap (there exists another edition with a second sticker on shrinkwrap).

    - NOTE 1: These records sound VERY harsh and distorted, I've encountered many US DMM cut records pressed by Specialty that sound so harsh and distorted.

Based on some other pressings from the same Masterdisk cut the problem is most likely in pressing quality or due to normal playing wear than in the DMM cut.

It may also be my equipment, especially the 2M Bronze cartridge, is simply too bright for DMM cuts.

To be honest, after hearing and comparing this to the Canadian and Holland pressings below I must say I really hate this pressing when played with 2M Bronze.

    - NOTE 2: These records have exceptionally deep and loud bass drum, especially for DMM records, even better and deeper than in the Columbia House

edition right below but like in many editions of this album the bass guitar is practically non-existent.

    - INNERSLEEVES: supposedly comes with printed paper innersleeves though they are missing from my copy

    - NOTE 1: Apparently these are not DMM records and many people seem to mix this release to the Elektra edition, some even intentionally due to worse sound quality.

    - NOTE 2: Due to the VERY harsh and distorted sound of the Elektra DMM LPs right above I prefer slightly more of the sound quality of these LPs than the sound quality

of the US Elektra DMM LPs right above even though these sound VERY different, like lacquer cut LPs.

These records sound somewhat soft and muffled compared to normal good quality lacquer cut records, much like comparing the Tom Coyne cut EMV pressing

and Sterling cut HRM pressing of Kill 'Em All way above.

                          Originally released in 1988.

    - NOTE 1: Based on the runouts this originates from the same cut as the US DMM cut Elektra edition above, some pressing plates seem to have been sent to

                     the Great White North.

    - NOTE 2: These records sound way better than the US Elektra pressing above, no harsh or distroted sound at all.

Along with the Holland pressing below these are the best records of this album I've yet played.

In addition, just like the US Elektra pressing above, these records also have exceptionally deep and loud bass drum.

    - RELEASED: Released in 1991 though based on the runouts this one is a repress.

These sounds more harsh, bigger but also lacking bass compared to the Bellman cut edition.

    - INNERSLEEVES: white polylined paper innersleeves, die-cut from both sides to show the center labels (the original innersleeves)

    - RELEASED: Reissue released in 24th of July 2015 (source: Finnish EMP webshop).

This is just a repress of the previous reissue released in 2008 you can read it from the Pallas code.

                          Originally released in 1991.

    - OTHER: Originally released sealed without any stickers on shrinkwrap, comes with a lyrics and credits insert.

180 g vinyl (source: Finnish EMP webshop).

    - NOTE 1: The stamped markings on side B are very faint and hard to read. That's probably why the three last numbers have been etched over the stamp.

    - NOTE 2: The second disc of my copy had a pressing error and frequently skipped, very annoying. Otherwise these sound VERY good and somewhat softer

and smaller and definitely have better bass than the original 1991 Holland pressing above. I prefer these over the original Holland edition.

    - RELEASED: Probably made and released in 1996.

    - OTHER: Originally released sealed with a sticker on top of the clear plastic sleeve. Comes with one-sidedly printed backing cardboard.

    - NOTE 1: The Az/Bz marks on the runouts are most likely meant to be A2/B2.

    - NOTE 2: The sound quality is very good as is the pressing quality. The only downsides with my copy are slight surface noise on B-side and the way too small center hole.

Also, the plastic sleeve is a pretty tight fit which is why I have to use brute force to get the vinyl out.
